Checking Comment Assignments Before Sending a Draft

Pull up the comment history using the speech bubble icon in the top bar or by opening any comment thread. Each comment already has the commenter name or email visible, but that alone does not mean the thread is someone’s responsibility. You are looking for the Assign to label or a person name sitting directly under the comment body text.

A visible label means that thread has a target. Without one, the thread is waiting for someone to claim it or for you to assign it. Scan all open threads so you do not leave a blanket of unattended notes for the next person.

Using the Assignee Dropdown to Set Ownership

The comment box has a person icon called Assign to placed just by the reply field. Click it and select one person, whether that is yourself, the reviewer, or a teammate. A notification email fires off automatically, and the thread now carries that associate name so both of you can see it. No assignment means the comment simply sits there without prodding anyone.

Whether you pick yourself or the reviewer, the flow speeds up to simple look-assign-auto-cycle resolve.

Reviewing Unresolved Comments Before Sharing

From the Comments pane filter inbox, pick Open or Unresolved. Google Docs separates finished-resolved threads apart on their own filter jump trail, so you only face pending ones. Check each unresolved comment to confirm whether it has an assignee and whether the assigned person has already replied.

An unresolved comment without an assignee needs a decision on who should handle it, so set the assignee before sending. A resolved comment that remains relevant can be reopened by clicking the Resolve button again.

Confirming Comment Visibility for the Reviewer

Click the Share button in the top-right corner before sending the draft. Check the sharing settings to see what permission level the reviewer has.

Reviewers with Commenter or Editor access can see all comments. Those with Viewer access can see comments but cannot reply or resolve them. Editor access is necessary for the reviewer to assign comments or mark them as resolved, while Viewer access is sufficient when the reviewer only needs to read comments without changing them. Confirm the permission level matches what the reviewer needs to do, and adjust it before you send the draft link.

FAQ

Question: How do I know if a comment is assigned to me in Google Docs?
Answer: Open the comment thread and look for the Assigned to label under the comment text. Your name or email appearing there means the comment is waiting for your response. An absent name means the comment is unassigned and needs an owner.

Question: Can I assign a comment to someone who is not in the document yet?
Answer: Yes, type the person’s email address in the assignee field. Google Docs will send them an invitation to view or edit the document, and the comment will appear with their name once they accept.

Question: What happens to assigned comments when I resolve them?
Answer: Resolving a comment closes the thread and removes it from the Open filter. The comment is still visible in the Resolved filter for future reference, but the assignee no longer receives notifications about it.
